Shift Happens
We all have things we really don’t like to do at the gym, versus the stuff that we wish would appear more often on our program. So first off, this is absolutely normal. NOBODY likes EVERYTHING their trainer makes them do. Even trainers!
Prime example: I used to hate any kind of power-lifting move, especially the Snatch. They require a kind of rhythm and practice that I just didn’t feel capable of doing, and because I felt like I sucked at them, I avoided any workout that programmed them at all.
But training power moves is incredibly important for women. If we don’t train power, we have slower reaction time if we trip or slip. It’s also great for elasticity and resilience in our muscles and joints, not to mention the whole bone-density thing. So I decided to give snatches another chance.
Taking on this challenge has been so fun! One thing I learned was that I was going way too heavy at first. Learning power moves really requires lower weight in the beginning, so you can practice each piece of the timing. I also hadn’t realized the joy of becoming powerful. It really is quite the ego boost, to load up a heavy bar and throw it overhead in one smooth motion. And it makes throwing my suitcase into the overhead compartment feel like child’s play!
I was recently reminded of this mind-shift, courtesy of our very own Cassie Kastens. During one of her sessions, she stumbled on the perfect perspective change, when she realized that the things she “hates doing” are actually just the things she’s new at!
Friends, this is THE magic. It’s so simple that it feels obvious, but this is how we know it’s the truth! Additionally, mind-shifts feel like a miracle because they suddenly make the whole workout less daunting AND they increase our willingness to show up anyway.
So next time you find yourself groaning about something on your program, consider if a shift needs to happen so that you can conquer something you didn’t know you wanted to learn.
